Q.I am a black female, and
have a huge birthmark on my leg. Its been there all
of my life, so I'm assuming its a birthmark. I have
dark skin, and the birthmark is lighter than the rest
of my skin. Are there any hypopigment creams or treatments
that can be done to darken this area to the rest of
my body?
A.Lighter marks on darker
skin are easier to hide than darker spots on lighter
skin. The easiest method would be to try a tanning
lotion. I suspect that the area would darken but
may not darken to your satisfaction. Another option
is corrective cosmetics. This involves make-up creams
that hide skin imperfections. We use this extensively
on birthmarks and surgical procedures where there
is discoloration of the skin. In our community, these
products are available in the major department stores.
Q.I am just 24 years old
but I want to start preventing wrinkles and future
signs of aging. Other than daily sunblock, what else
do you recommend as a must in my skin regimen?
A.Your New Year's resolution
should be daily skin care. The literature is overwhelming
supporting antioxidants, retinoids and exfoliating
agents. Use of these products on a daily basis will
help reverse some of the deleterious effects of photoaging.
Sunscreen/block (SPF 15 or above) twice daily is
essential.
Q.My son has suffered from
AQUAGENIC URTICARIA for fifteen years since his teens.
It is a tormenting disease and antihistamines seem
to help little. Is there a cure, or best, is there
a cause so we can rid him of this horrible problem?
A.Aquagenic urticaria is
hives from water exposure. There is a histamine release
in the skin from water of any temperature. This type
of urticaria is thought to have an immunological basis.
The cause is unclear and the treatment varies from
person to person. When antihistamines are ineffective,
other medications such as calcium channel blockers
or immunosuppressants can be used. This is a rare condition
and you need to find a physician in your area that
will work with you and try different medications as
needed.
